FAA Initiates Real-World Testing for Air Taxi Startups
News Summary
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved eight pilot programs across 26 states in the United States, allowing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) companies such as Archer and Joby to commence testing their aircraft this summer. These trials, made possible by the White House’s Advanced Air Mobility and eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, aim to explore urban air taxi services, regional passenger transportation, cargo delivery, emergency medical operations, and autonomous flight technology. Despite the rapid emergence of eVTOL startups, none have yet received ‘type certificates’ for passenger or commercial use, with regulatory synchronization being the main hurdle. Archer and Joby are closest to certification, having received the FAA’s final airworthiness criteria. The new program is expected to expedite operations, with Beta CEO Kyle Clark noting it could advance his company’s timeline by a year. Archer likens the program to robotaxi testing and believes it will enhance public trust in its Midnight aircraft.
