Cura: A New Canadian Startup Aiming to Decarbonize Cement Production

Canada

News Summary

Phil De Luna, the former chief science and commercial officer of Deep Sky, has co-launched a new startup called Cura, alongside UBC researcher Sabrina Scott and Aurora Hydrogen co-founder Erin Bobicki. The Vancouver- and Calgary-based cleantech startup focuses on developing electrochemical technology to decarbonize cement production. Cement production is a significant contributor to global COâ‚‚ emissions, and Cura aims to reduce these emissions by up to 85% using its innovative approach. The company, which has recently emerged from stealth, is in the process of scaling its technology and plans to build a 100-tonne per year pilot facility in British Columbia or Alberta. With partnerships in place with international infrastructure developers, Cura aims to integrate its technology into large-scale cement production. De Luna, now Cura’s CTO, expressed his confidence in the startup’s potential to contribute to Canada’s net-zero by 2050 goals.
