China Unveils World’s First Wind-Powered Underwater Data Center
News Summary
China has announced the completion of the first phase of the world’s first wind-powered underwater data center, located in Shanghai’s Lin-gang Special Area. With an investment of approximately $226 million, this project represents a significant step towards sustainable computing infrastructure in China. By utilizing wind energy, the data center achieves a power capacity of 24 megawatts. The innovative design involves submerging servers in the ocean, where seawater naturally cools them, reducing energy demand for cooling to less than 10%. The data center aims for a PUE (power usage effectiveness) of no more than 1.15, significantly surpassing China’s national policy requirement for new data centers to achieve a PUE of less than 1.25 by 2025.
