Black Entrepreneurship Alliance Expands Support for Black Founders in GTA
News Summary
The Black Entrepreneurship Alliance (BEA) is creating space, mentorship, and community for Black and racialized founders in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). With less than two percent of venture capital funding going to Black founders, the BEA aims to bridge the gap by offering curated programs, mentorship, non-dilutive funding opportunities, and a network for entrepreneurs in underserved neighborhoods like Jane and Finch and Rexdale. Established in 2021, the BEA was co-designed by York University’s YSpace, the Black Creek Community Health Centre, TD Community Engagement Centre, and Schulich ExecEd. Launched as the first entrepreneurship program in Jane and Finch, it provides virtual and in-person support from York University, serving over 136 ventures and 500 first-time founders. Notable ventures include Swiirl, which collaborates with brands to drive social impact. The BEA recently received $2.4 million from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario to expand its reach across Northwest Toronto. The alliance is developing the Element Centre, a future hub for inclusive innovation and economic empowerment, located at York University’s Keele Campus.
