H.A.L.O. Innovation Team Wins UHN Inventor of the Year Award
News Summary
The interdisciplinary team behind the patient monitoring innovation H.A.L.O. (Human Attended Live Observation) has been awarded UHN’s Mission of Excellence Team Inventor of the Year Award. H.A.L.O. was developed to enhance safety for high-risk patients by allowing trained staff to monitor them remotely from a central control room. Originally piloted at Toronto General Hospital, it has expanded to a fully operational company in 2025, providing virtual care services beyond the UHN hospital network. The innovation was co-founded by Marijana Zubrinic, a nurse practitioner at UHN’s Toronto General Hospital, and Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, former surgeon in chief at UHN. The award recognizes significant contributions to commercialization and patient care, transforming the management of vulnerable patients in Canadian hospitals.
