Vancouver Startup Arca Secures 10-Year Carbon Removal Deal with Microsoft
News Summary
Vancouver-based carbon capture startup Arca has entered into a 10-year agreement with Microsoft to remove nearly 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This collaboration is part of Microsoft’s goal to become carbon-negative by 2030. Arca’s solution utilizes carbon mineralization, where gaseous carbon is transformed into rock through microwave radiation and certain minerals. This deal follows Arca’s successful full-scale mineralization demonstration project at an active mine site. Microsoft’s director of Carbon Dioxide Removal Program, Phil Goodman, expressed confidence in Arca’s ability to sequester carbon, highlighting the scalability and permanence of their approach. This partnership reflects Microsoft’s strategy to diversify its carbon removal efforts. Arca, which has received support from NorthX Climate Tech and was a finalist in the Xprize Carbon Removal competition, aims to expand its mineralization projects from pilot stages to large-scale operations.
