University of Waterloo Launches GENESIS Lab for AI and Blockchain Research
News Summary
The University of Waterloo is set to open the GENESIS Lab, a new research facility focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, supported by a $1.4 million CAD donation from Interop Labs. The lab, located within the university’s David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, aims to enhance collaboration between academia and industry at the intersection of AI and blockchain. Founded by Sergey Gorbunov, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo, Interop Labs is a blockchain startup that previously developed the Axelar Web3 interoperability network. The GENESIS Lab will offer industry seminars, postgraduate scholarships, and fellowships, including 12 PhD fellowships and six undergraduate fellowships through the student-run Waterloo Blockchain organization. This initiative follows a similar partnership at Stanford University with Eliza Labs to explore AI’s impact on digital currencies.
