Terraton’s Franchise Model Aims to Scale Biochar Production
News Summary
Terraton, a startup focused on biochar technology, is adopting a franchise model similar to that of McDonald’s to scale its operations. The company has raised $11.5 million in a seed round led by Lowercarbon Capital and Gigascale Capital. Other participants include ANA Holdings’ ANA Future Frontier Fund, East Japan Railway Company’s Takanawa Gateway Global Co-Benefits Fund, and angel investors such as Google’s Jeff Dean and OpenAI board member Bret Taylor. Terraton aims to develop biochar facilities that turn agricultural waste into carbon dioxide-sequestering fertilizer. Founders Kevin Gibbs and Greg D’Alesandre believe their business-in-a-box approach will facilitate rapid replication of biochar facilities globally. The company has already established two facilities in Africa, partnering with local businesses to manage operations. The initiative addresses supply constraints in the biochar market and aims to meet the demand from large corporations like Microsoft and Google.
