Taiwan’s Ambitious Push in the Drone Industry
News Summary
Taiwan is actively developing its drone industry amid increasing geopolitical tensions and the threat of invasion from China. Aiming to produce 180,000 drones annually by 2028, Taiwan has only managed to manufacture between 8,000 and 10,000 drones in the past year. The country faces structural challenges including high manufacturing costs, low domestic procurement, and minimal foreign orders. To overcome these hurdles, Taiwan’s government has launched the Drone National Team to collaborate with the industry in scaling up production. Inspired by Ukraine’s use of drones in defense, Taiwan is working to develop small, tactical UAVs. Additionally, Taiwan’s semiconductor technology and manufacturing capabilities are being leveraged to establish itself as a major hub in the global drone market. The U.S. is also collaborating with Taiwan to enhance its drone capabilities, aiming for secure, non-Chinese supply chains.
