Rocket Lab Secures Major Defense Contracts with US Space Development Agency
News Summary
Rocket Lab has won a significant $816 million contract with the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) to design and manufacture 18 satellites equipped with advanced missile warning, tracking, and defense sensors. This new contract, which is the company’s largest to date, is part of the SDA’s Tracking Layer Tranche 3 program. It is in addition to an existing $515 million award for the SDA’s Transport Layer-Beta Tranche 2 program, aiming to provide a satellite communications network in low Earth orbit for encrypted, low-latency data transfer to the military. With these contracts, Rocket Lab’s SDA awards total over $1.3 billion, marking a significant expansion into the defense sector as the company diversifies beyond its traditional role as a rocket company.
