Ottawa Commits $21.5 Million to Alberta Carbon Capture Projects
News Summary
The federal government of Canada has announced a $21.5 million funding initiative aimed at five carbon capture projects in Alberta. This funding, provided through the Energy Innovation Program, seeks to reduce the cost of capturing and storing carbon dioxide emissions. Among the recipients, Bow Valley Carbon Cochrane Ltd. is set to receive $10 million to enhance a gas extraction plant near Calgary, potentially reducing emissions equivalent to removing 12,000 cars from the road annually. Other notable recipients include Enbridge Inc. and Enhance Energy Inc., who will receive $4 million and $5 million respectively for developing storage hubs in Central Alberta. This announcement comes amid uncertainty surrounding the $16.5 billion Pathways Alliance project, a major proposed carbon capture initiative by a consortium of oilsands producers. The federal and provincial governments have yet to finalize support for this project, which aims to capture emissions from over 20 oilsands facilities and transport them to an underground storage hub in Cold Lake, Alberta. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has proposed linking this emissions-reduction project with the development of a new crude oil pipeline to the West Coast, a project that is not yet underway.
