OpenAI Releases New Open-Weight Language Models
News Summary
OpenAI has released its first new open-weight large language models since 2019’s GPT-2. The new models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, are now available for download from Hugging Face. Unlike open-source models, open-weight models provide the numerical values the models learned during training, allowing users to use and build upon these models without access to the underlying code and data. The larger gpt-oss-120b model requires more powerful hardware, while the smaller gpt-oss-20b can run on modern computers with 16GB of RAM. These models offer capabilities similar to OpenAI’s proprietary systems, albeit without multi-modal input processing. OpenAI’s release of these models marks a significant milestone in providing more accessible AI tools to developers and researchers, aligning with the company’s mission of democratizing AI technology.
