Nova Scotia and Ottawa Designate Areas for Offshore Wind Development
News Summary
Nova Scotia, in collaboration with Ottawa, has announced the designation of four areas off its coast for offshore wind development, aiming to establish itself as a significant player in Canada’s future energy landscape. Following public consultations initiated in March, the designated areas include French Bank, Middle Bank, Sable Island Bank, and Sydney Bight, covering a total of 12,549 square kilometers. The decision comes after considering feedback from various stakeholders, including environmental organizations and the offshore wind industry. Nova Scotia plans to issue development bids by the end of the year, with a goal of licensing five gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. Premier Tim Houston envisions the province becoming an ‘energy superpower,’ with aspirations to produce 40 gigawatts of electricity, contingent on federal and business support, and the construction of a cross-country cable to transport the energy to other markets.
