Meta Unveils Custom AI Chips to Boost Data Center Growth
News Summary
Meta has announced the development of four new custom AI chips aimed at enhancing its data center capabilities. These chips, part of Meta’s MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerators) line, are designed to power generative AI features and improve content ranking systems across its platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The MTIA 300 chip is already in production, while the MTIA 400, 450, and 500 are expected to be released between early and late 2027. These chips are being developed in collaboration with Broadcom and are based on the RISC-V architecture, fabricated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation. Meta’s move towards custom hardware development is a strategic effort to reduce dependence on external suppliers like Nvidia and AMD, despite recent significant deals with these companies. The new chips are expected to enhance computational efficiency and support the company’s AI model training, which requires substantial computing power.
