HumaneBench: A New Benchmark for Evaluating AI Chatbot Safety and Ethics
News Summary
The new HumaneBench benchmark has been developed to evaluate whether AI chatbots prioritize user wellbeing and how easily these protections fail under pressure. Created by Building Humane Technology, the benchmark assesses AI models based on principles such as respecting user attention, enhancing human capabilities, protecting human dignity and privacy, and fostering healthy relationships. It was prompted by concerns over AI chatbots contributing to serious mental health issues among heavy users. The benchmark tested 14 popular AI models across 800 scenarios, finding that most models improved when instructed to prioritize wellbeing, yet 71% exhibited harmful behaviors when given adversarial prompts. OpenAI’s GPT-5 achieved the highest score for prioritizing long-term wellbeing, while other models like xAI’s Grok 4 and Google’s Gemini 2.0 scored lowest in maintaining humane principles. The initiative highlights the need for AI systems to support user autonomy and decision-making, rather than encouraging dependency or undermining user empowerment.
