GitHub Copilot Introduces Premium AI Model Charges
News Summary
GitHub Copilot, the AI coding assistant owned by Microsoft, announced new pricing changes for its services. Starting in May, GitHub will implement ‘premium requests’ for users who opt for AI models beyond the base model, OpenAI’s GPT-4o. This will affect tasks such as ‘agentic’ coding and multi-file edits. The Copilot Pro plan will include 300 monthly premium requests as part of its $20 subscription. Other plans, Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise, will offer 300 and 1,000 premium requests per month, respectively. Additional requests can be purchased at $0.04 each, or users can upgrade to the new Copilot Pro+ plan for $39 per month, which includes 1,500 premium requests and access to advanced models like OpenAI’s GPT-4.5. These changes reflect the increased computing costs associated with more advanced AI models. Despite the price increase, GitHub Copilot remains a significant revenue source for Microsoft, accounting for over 40% of GitHub’s revenue growth in 2024.
