FAA Launches Pilot Program for eVTOL Startups to Test Operations

Global

News Summary

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced a new pilot program enabling electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) startups to test certain operations before receiving full regulatory certification. This initiative marks a significant shift for companies that have been conducting limited test flights while working towards FAA approval. To participate, companies must partner with state, local, tribal, or territorial governments. The FAA plans to approve at least five projects, which can last up to three years, covering areas such as short-range air taxis, long-range fixed-wing flights, cargo hauling, emergency or medical logistics, and automation safety. Successful projects are expected to provide valuable data to inform the regulatory framework for the advanced air mobility (AAM) sector. Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation have expressed interest in applying to the program, with applications due by December 11, 2025, and pilot projects potentially starting as early as 2026.
