CRTC Invests $17M to Enhance Rural Internet and Cell Service Across Canada
News Summary
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is investing over $17 million to expand high-speed internet and improve cell service in rural parts of Canada. This initiative, part of the Broadband Fund which was launched in 2019, aims to enhance internet connectivity in 18 communities across Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario by building approximately 330 km of fibre lines. Five companies, including Minto Communications Society, County of Forty Mile No. 8, Vianet Inc., MCSnet, and Missing Link Internet Inc., will receive funding to facilitate this expansion. Additionally, the funding will improve cell phone service along major roads in Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Ontario. This effort is part of a broader federal commitment of $3.2 billion to enhance rural broadband services, creating new opportunities for local businesses and improving access to healthcare and education.
