CRTC Imposes Cost Recovery Fee on Google Under Online News Act
News Summary
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has ruled that Google must cover the costs of implementing the Online News Act. This decision follows the CRTC’s mandate that digital news intermediaries, like Google, are responsible for the regulatory expenses incurred by making news content available to Canadians. Although Google argued that its $100 million contribution to the Canadian Journalism Collective should offset these costs, the CRTC decided that Google remains liable for the full regulatory expenses, as it is currently the only company subject to this regulation. The Cost Recovery Regulations will be enforced starting April 1, 2025.
