Canadian Quantum Startups Advance in DARPA Competition
News Summary
Three Canadian companies, Nord Quantique, Xanadu, and Photonic, have progressed to the next phase of the US military-backed Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) led by DARPA. This initiative aims to develop a functional, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2033, with potential funding of up to $316 million USD. The Canadian startups, selected for Phase B, demonstrate unique approaches to quantum computing technologies, such as superconducting qubits and silicon spin qubits. These advancements position them alongside tech giants like IBM in the race to build a utility-scale quantum computer. The Canadian government has also announced substantial funding for the quantum tech industry, totaling $334.3 million CAD over five years, underscoring the sector’s growing importance. Both Xanadu and Photonic have received grants from Canada’s defence department to develop technology solutions aimed at safeguarding North America against threats.
