Canadian Initiatives Launch to Boost Defence Tech Startups

Canada

News Summary

A series of new initiatives have been launched by Canadian technology and defence leaders to foster innovation in defence tech startups as Canada plans to increase its defence spending. The Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) has introduced a global CDL Defence accelerator to support dual-use technology startups focused on defence, national security, and critical infrastructure. This program will operate across Canada and Europe, aiming to support up to 25 startups annually.

Additionally, Vimy Forge, based in Fredericton, is launching as a national defence accelerator to scale Canadian defence tech solutions by bringing together small and medium-sized businesses, academia, industry partners, and government. Vimy Forge aims to prevent Canadian innovators from falling into the ‘valley of death’ between research and procurement.

Ottawa-based Calian is also contributing by launching Calian Ventures, which will assist businesses in testing, validating, and selling defence offerings to the Canadian Armed Forces. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to enhance Canada’s defence tech and national security capabilities, especially amid increased interest in defence investment spurred by trade tensions with the United States.

The Canadian government has committed to increasing its defence expenditure to meet NATO’s thresholds and has encouraged investments in the sector as part of a forthcoming Defence Industrial Strategy. This has led to a surge in activity from public and private entities in the Canadian defence tech sector.
