Canada Strengthens Sovereign Space Launch Capabilities with $225 Million Investment

Canada

News Summary

The Canadian federal government has announced a significant investment of nearly $225 million to bolster the country’s sovereign space launch capabilities. This funding includes a $200 million commitment to lease a dedicated space-launch pad at Maritime Launch Services’ (MLS) spaceport near Canso, Nova Scotia. This initiative is part of Canada’s $6.6 billion Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS), aimed at enhancing the nation’s defense and security through improved space launch infrastructure.

In addition to supporting MLS, the government is providing nearly $25 million in grants to three Canadian companies: Toronto-based Canada Rocket Company (CRC), Newfoundland-based Nordspace, and Longueuil, Quebec-based Reaction Dynamics. Each company will receive $8.3 million under the first round of the DND’s Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) Launch the North contest. These grants will help the companies advance their rocket launch capabilities and conduct necessary testing.

The investment is a strategic move to reduce Canada’s dependence on foreign rocket launches and establish a domestic capability for rapid space launch responses. The development of space-based intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, satellite communications, and launch capabilities is a key focus of the DIS. CRC plans to use its funding to accelerate the development of a light-lift launch vehicle, evolving into a medium-lift vehicle by 2034.

Nordspace, which faced challenges with previous launch attempts, has partnered with German entities to enhance its 3D-printed rocket manufacturing methods. Reaction Dynamics aims to conduct its own rocket launch from the MLS spaceport by 2028, utilizing its participation in NATO’s DIANA tech accelerator. This comprehensive effort underscores Canada’s commitment to becoming a formidable player in the global space industry.
