Canada Invests in AI Compute Infrastructure at University of Toronto
News Summary
The Canadian government has announced a $42.5 million investment to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure at the University of Toronto (U of T). This funding is part of Canada’s $2-billion Sovereign AI Compute Strategy aimed at bolstering the nation’s AI research capabilities. The initiative will expand U of T’s current AI compute capacity, enabling researchers across Canada to train AI models with billions of parameters. The investment includes a $40-million capital injection for the 2025–2026 fiscal year, with an additional $2.5 million allocated over the following two years for operation and maintenance. U of T plans to invest an additional $100,000 in the initiative, which will largely go towards purchasing new graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia. These GPUs will be integrated with U of T’s existing Trillium system, significantly enhancing its computing capacity. The federal government also plans to establish the AI Sovereign Compute Infrastructure Program (SCIP), which will support the creation of a large-scale, Canadian-owned supercomputer. This investment aims to keep Canadian data within the country and fortify the nation’s AI research sovereignty.
