Canada Ends EV Incentive, Future of Rebates Uncertain

Canada

News Summary

Canada’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program has officially ended after being on hold for several months. The federal incentive, managed by Transport Canada, previously offered consumers $5,000 towards battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The program, which contributed approximately $2.6 billion towards the sale of around 560,000 EVs since its inception in 2019, ran out of funds earlier this year. Despite statements from members of parliament about efforts to revive the incentive, its future remains uncertain amidst a growing pushback against the government’s 2035 ban on internal combustion engines and the emergence of more affordable Chinese EVs. Transport Canada has yet to announce any new decisions regarding a successor program.
