BookNet Canada Collaborates on Indigenous Metadata Standards
News Summary
BookNet Canada (BNC) and la Société de gestion de la BTLF (BTLF) have released two new bibliographic standards in collaboration with international standards organization EDItEUR and the Australian Publishers Association. These standards, known as ONIX and Thema, focus on enhancing the discoverability of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis publishing and books by Indigenous authors. The documents outline best practices for highlighting Indigenous content and contributors, with the goal of improving metadata and supporting Indigenous peoples’ right to data sovereignty. The release of these standards marks a significant step towards decolonizing book industry norms and reflects a broader commitment to diversity and cultural representation.
