Bell Slashes Dividend Amid Rising Profits and Wireless Challenges
News Summary
BCE, the parent company of Bell, has announced a significant reduction in its annual dividend from $3.99 to $1.75 per share, a move aimed at maintaining financial flexibility amid uncertain economic conditions and regulatory challenges. Despite a 49.5% increase in net income for Q1 2025, Bell’s wireless segment is facing difficulties, with a loss of 9,600 postpaid mobile customers and a 1.8% drop in wireless revenue per user. However, Bell Media has seen positive growth, with a 7% increase in revenue driven by digital ads and Crave subscriptions. The company also reported a substantial increase in free cash flow to $798 million, largely due to reduced spending and improved cash management. Additionally, Bell has entered a US$1.5 billion partnership with PSP Investments to expand Ziply Fiber in underserved U.S. regions. Despite these efforts, Bell anticipates continued challenges from competition, content costs, and regulatory pressures.
