AST SpaceMobile Secures Major Verizon Partnership for Space-Based Cellular Network
News Summary
AST SpaceMobile has signed a significant deal with Verizon to integrate its satellite network with Verizon’s terrestrial infrastructure, aiming to provide space-based cellular broadband across the United States. This partnership, which builds on a previous $100 million commitment by Verizon, is part of AST’s strategy to expand its share in the emerging space-to-cellular market. The deal is crucial as AST seeks to deploy its BlueBird satellite constellation, designed to connect directly with unmodified cell phones. Having already placed five satellites into low Earth orbit, AST plans to launch an additional 45-60 satellites by 2026. This development highlights the rapidly evolving satellite-to-cell market, where AST competes with SpaceX’s Starlink, which is working with T-Mobile, and has acquired $17 billion worth of wireless spectrum. AST has demonstrated successful 4G and 5G connections through its satellites, but scaling the technology to serve millions remains a challenge. Following the announcement, AST’s shares rose by over 15%.
