Amazon to Close All Québec Facilities, Shift to Third-Party Delivery
News Summary
Amazon has announced the closure of its operations in Québec, affecting seven operation sites and resulting in approximately 1,900 job losses. The facilities, located in areas such as Lachine, Longueuil, and Coteau-du-Lac, include three delivery stations, two sorting centers, one fulfillment center, and an extra-large delivery station. Amazon will continue its delivery services in Québec through third-party distributors, a model it previously used in 2020. The affected employees, including 1,700 part-time and full-time workers and 250 seasonal workers, will receive severance pay and transitional benefits. The decision to close follows a review of Amazon’s Québec operations and is not linked to the unionization efforts at the Laval warehouse, the only unionized Amazon site in Canada. Montréal-based courier company Intelcom, already an Amazon subcontractor, might assume some of the delivery responsibilities.
