Tim Leiweke Indicted in U.S. Arena Bid-Rigging Scheme
News Summary
Tim Leiweke, the former CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), has been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly orchestrating a bid-rigging conspiracy related to the construction of an arena at a public university in Austin, Texas. Leiweke was a co-founder and CEO of Oak View Group (OVG), a company involved in sports and real estate. The DOJ charges allege that Leiweke conspired to have a competitor withdraw from the bidding process in exchange for subcontracts, allowing OVG to be the sole qualified bidder. As a result, OVG and Legends Hospitality have agreed to pay penalties of $15 million and $1.5 million, respectively. Following the indictment, Leiweke announced his transition from CEO to vice-chairman of OVG’s board of directors, with Chris Granger appointed as interim CEO. The Moody Center, which was the project in question, is now operational. Despite the allegations, no charges were filed against OVG, and there were no admissions of wrongdoing from the company.
