French Fintech Qonto Files for Banking License to Expand Services
News Summary
Qonto, a French fintech company targeting European freelancers and small-to-medium businesses (SMBs), has reached 600,000 customers and is seeking a banking license in France. Currently operating under a payment institution license obtained in 2018, Qonto aims to expand its service offerings by acquiring a full banking license. This move would enable the company to offer broader lending, savings, and investment options, addressing a significant demand from customers for credit services. Despite its success, Qonto’s current license limits its ability to offer credit beyond its own equity and restricts borrowing terms to a maximum of 12 months. The company has already facilitated €50 million in financing through its Pay Later service. CEO Alexandre Prot highlighted that achieving profitability ahead of schedule in 2023 has positioned Qonto to pursue this strategic expansion without requiring additional funding beyond the $552 million raised in 2022. Qonto’s expansion plans also include enhancing its product offerings and infrastructure, with an eye towards future growth and potential IPO prospects.
