Broadcom’s Licensing Clampdown on VMware Perpetual License Holders
News Summary
Following its acquisition of VMware in November 2023, Broadcom has ceased the sale of VMware perpetual licenses, opting instead for subscription models. As a result, Broadcom has been sending cease-and-desist letters to former VMware customers whose support contracts have expired, instructing them to stop using maintenance releases, updates, and other enhancements issued post-contract expiration. These letters warn of potential audits, which are now being conducted. Connor Consulting, an auditing firm, is performing reviews of VMware deployments and entitlements for selected former customers. The move has sparked controversy among VMware users, with some citing significant cost increases and impacts on security due to lack of support.
