Canadian Quantum Startups Join US Military-Backed Quantum Race
News Summary
Three Canadian quantum startups—Toronto-based Xanadu, Vancouver-based Photonic, and Sherbrooke-based Nord Quantique—have been selected to participate in the first phase of the United States military-supported Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI). This program, run by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), aims to develop a usable quantum computer by 2033. These companies are among 18 selected for Stage A, receiving $1 million USD each to conceptualize a utility-scale quantum computer. The initiative seeks to accelerate the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers and offers funding up to $316 million USD for successful candidates. The involvement of these Canadian firms highlights the growing international interest in quantum technology and the strategic importance of innovation in this field.
