BioAlert Secures $2.5 Million to Enhance Water Pathogen Detection
News Summary
BioAlert Solutions, a cleantech startup based in Sherbrooke, Quebec, has raised $2.5 million in a seed funding round aimed at expanding its automated water quality monitoring technology. The company’s device, which is already approved by Health Canada and the U.S. FDA, is designed to detect Legionella bacteria, a pathogen responsible for Legionnaires’ disease, in cooling systems of buildings like hospitals and data centers. The funding will help BioAlert enhance its pathogen detection capabilities to include E. coli and salmonella, and expand its current installation base beyond 60 sites in North America. The seed round was co-led by cleantech firms Cycle H20 and GreenSky Ventures, with participation from Fondaction and Spring Impact Capital. BioAlert’s technology is noted for its high sensitivity, offering up to five times better detection than current industry standards, and it provides a remote software platform for monitoring contamination levels.
