News Summary

Intuitive Machines’ latest lunar mission faced a setback as their Athena lander, part of the IM-2 mission, ended up inoperable shortly after landing on the moon’s south pole. The lander, which was designed to deploy several scientific experiments, tipped over and was unable to recharge its batteries due to the orientation of its solar panels. This incident marks the second consecutive failure for Intuitive Machines, following a similar mishap with their Odysseus lander. Despite the failure, the company successfully deployed NASA’s Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment, which includes a drill capable of penetrating up to three feet into the lunar surface. Intuitive Machines is now exploring alternative methods to continue their lunar exploration efforts.
