Shopify Integrates AI Chatbot Commerce for Merchants
News Summary
Shopify has announced a significant update allowing its merchants to sell products through AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. This development is part of Shopify’s bi-annual Editions newsletter, with the latest winter edition featuring over 150 updates focused on enhancing AI features for sellers. The initiative, termed ‘agentic storefronts,’ enables Shopify stores to be ‘agent-ready by default,’ facilitating product discovery and sales through AI chatbots. Shopify’s CEO, Tobi Lütke, emphasized the importance of adapting to new shopping experiences, while Shopify’s vice-president of product, Vanessa Lee, highlighted the company’s commitment to ensuring merchants’ strong presence in emerging platforms. Merchants will set up product pages with schema codes for AI agents to present products efficiently. The AI agents will also access merchants’ policies and FAQs to address customer inquiries, providing insights into search trends. Shopify’s collaboration with OpenAI initially required merchants to pay a small fee for each transaction through ChatGPT. This enhancement is a continuation of Shopify’s push towards AI integration, following features like AI-based store design and task automation through natural language commands.
