Tesla Responds to Waymo’s Call with Detailed Safety Data
News Summary
Tesla has released a comprehensive safety report on its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, responding to a call for more transparency from Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana. During a TechCrunch Disrupt conference, Mawakana urged companies in the autonomous driving industry to disclose safety data. Tesla’s new report claims that its FSD users drive approximately 2.9 million miles between major collisions, significantly higher than the 505,000 miles recorded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for all drivers. The report also states that Tesla’s vehicles cover about 986,000 miles between minor collisions, compared to the NHTSA’s average of 178,000 miles. Tesla uses the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to define ‘major collisions’ as those involving airbag deployment. The company promises to update the data quarterly, maintaining a twelve-month aggregation to capture recent trends without disclosing injury rates.
