President Donald Trump has announced the termination of trade discussions with Canada in response to the country’s plan to implement a digital services tax targeting major technology firms, including American giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta. This tax, which imposes a 3% levy on revenues generated from Canadian users, has been described by Trump as a ‘blatant attack’ on U.S. companies. The decision to end trade talks with Canada comes amidst ongoing tensions and negotiations over tariffs that Trump had previously imposed on various goods. Canada, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, insists on continuing negotiations in the interest of Canadians. The digital services tax is set to be applied retroactively, potentially resulting in a $2 billion bill for U.S. companies by the end of the month. Trump has indicated plans to inform Canada of the new tariffs they will face when conducting business with the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
