After selling his first startup, Sam Altman was bankrolled by Thiel, who saw Altman as a quintessential millennial tech figure. Thiel’s investments in promising startups like Airbnb and Stripe, based on Altman’s recommendations, brought substantial returns. Influential in Altman’s career, Thiel also inspired him to reshape Y Combinator into an investor in ambitious ‘hard tech’ projects, including artificial intelligence. Yudkowsky, a techno-optimistic figure and AI doomsday prophet, influenced Thiel’s early AI investments, including one of the founders of DeepMind. This collaboration helped inspire the creation of OpenAI, with Thiel as a significant supporter inadvertently influencing AI-apocalyptic subcultures.
