Unlike his peers who are primarily investing in AI and U.S.-based defense tech, Slesinger has closed a $22 million fund dedicated to seed-stage European defense tech startups. His strategy is based on recognizing the increasing role of the private sector in what was traditionally a governmental concern. Slesinger’s efforts are aimed at addressing ‘gray zone competition’ in Europe\u2014activities by state or non-state actors that fall between peace and war. He has launched the European Defense Investor Network to support his mission. Despite cultural hesitance in Europe regarding defense investments, significant backers like the NATO Innovation Fund have emerged to support this sector. Slesinger’s portfolio includes startups like Helsing, valued over $5 billion, Athens-based Delian Alliance Industries, and Sweden’s Polar Mist, specializing in maritime drones. As geopolitical tensions rise and Europe reevaluates its security strategies, investments in defense tech are increasing, with European startups in this field raising 24% more capital in 2024 compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Eric Slesinger, a former CIA officer and founder of 201 Ventures, is distinguishing himself from other American venture capitalists by focusing on European defense technology startups.
