The Government of Ontario has approved Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) plan to construct the province’s first small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Darlington nuclear site in Bowmanville. This initiative is projected to create up to 18,000 jobs and contribute $500 million annually to Ontario’s economy. The first SMR, part of a $20.9 billion project, is expected to be operational by 2030. The government aims for 80% of project spending to benefit Ontario companies, sustaining an estimated 3,700 jobs over the next 65 years. This project will significantly impact Canada’s GDP, adding $38.5 billion over 65 years. The initiative positions Ontario as a leader within the G7, providing clean and affordable energy while encouraging further deployments in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick.
