OpenSNP, a major open-source repository for genetic data, is set to shut down and delete all user data by the end of April. Co-founder Bastian Greshake Tzovaras announced the decision citing data privacy concerns and the rise of authoritarian governments. The shutdown follows the bankruptcy of 23andMe, raising fears over the potential sale of sensitive genetic data. Greshake Tzovaras expressed concerns over the misuse of genetic information in an era marked by political instability and the dismantling of scientific institutions. Since its inception in 2011, openSNP has contributed significantly to academic research, offering a platform for users of commercial genetic testing kits to share data openly. The decision to close reflects growing apprehension about data privacy and the ethical implications of maintaining such a database.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
