Epoch Biodesign, a UK-based startup originally founded as a high school science project by Jacob Nathan, has raised $18.3 million in Series A funding to expand its innovative approach to tackling plastic waste. The startup focuses on developing AI-accelerated enzymes that can efficiently break down plastics, including polyester and nylon, which are widely used in fast fashion. The funding will be used to scale up production and establish a new facility capable of processing 150 tonnes of waste per year, with commercial-scale capacity expected by 2028. Epoch Biodesign\u2019s AI-driven enzyme design allows for significant improvements in enzyme efficiency, reducing the cost of recycling plastics compared to virgin materials. Supported by investors such as Extantia Capital and a partnership with fast fashion giant Inditex, the startup aims to make biorecycling a cost-effective solution to the global plastic crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
