Capital Power Corporation has announced that its Genesee Generating Station, located southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, has been retooled to run entirely on natural gas. This shift from coal is part of a $1.6-billion project that increases the plant’s capacity by 60% and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 40%. The company is positioning itself to take advantage of the burgeoning data centre opportunities in Alberta, supported by the province’s deregulated electricity market and favorable regulatory environment. Alberta’s technology minister has expressed the province’s ambition to establish $100 billion worth of AI data centres over the next five years. Capital Power’s CEO, Avik Dey, highlights the surplus of land, temperate climate, and excess power supply as key advantages for data centre projects in Alberta. Although no formal announcement has been made, the company is progressing towards a potential data centre project that could utilize up to 1.5 gigawatts of power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
