Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has sparked environmental and health concerns with its Colossus supercomputer project in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility plans to use 15 gas turbines continuously from June 2025 to June 2030, as per an operating permit with the Shelby County Health Department. These turbines are reported to emit hazardous air pollutants, including formaldehyde, at levels exceeding EPA’s annual cap, impacting the surrounding community of 22,000 residents. Despite the economic benefits and technological advancements the project promises, critics have raised issues about the lack of transparency and oversight, as the turbines have been operational since 2024 without public notice. The health department indicates that the permits are not yet approved and there is no set timeline for approval.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
