The UK government has announced a $1.47 billion investment plan to reduce its reliance on foreign AI hardware, focusing on fostering domestic tech growth. A key component of this plan is the development of a national AI supercomputer, equipped with $530 million worth of hardware, including $200 million dedicated to specialized inference chips. UK startups, such as Olix and Fractile, are expected to benefit from this initiative, with British firms being prioritized in the procurement process. This move is part of a broader strategy to achieve ‘AI sovereignty’ and reduce dependence on US technology amid geopolitical tensions. The UK is also establishing AI growth zones and has launched a $675 million venture fund for local AI startups. By supporting domestic chip startups, the UK aims to create a niche in the evolving AI datacenter sector, which could offer significant strategic leverage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
