A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at Toronto’s University Health Network (UHN) and published in Nature Medicine reveals that smartwatches, particularly the Apple Watch, can play a critical role in monitoring and managing heart failure. The study involved 217 heart failure patients who used Apple Watches to track their heart rate, physical activity, and oxygen saturation levels over three months. Researchers developed an AI algorithm to analyze this data, finding that a decline in daily cardiopulmonary fitness by 10% or more was linked to a significantly increased risk of hospitalization or urgent medical care. The study found that the Apple Watch could detect early warning signs of worsening heart failure up to three weeks before a patient required hospitalization, offering a proactive tool for managing heart health. The research underscores the potential for everyday devices to provide real-time health monitoring, enabling earlier intervention and more responsive care. This development is particularly significant given that heart failure affects approximately 64 million people worldwide and is a leading cause of hospitalization in Canada.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
