A new gig economy has emerged where individuals from around the world, including South Africa, India, and the USA, are monetizing their personal data by selling images, videos, and audio recordings to train AI models. Platforms such as Kled AI, Silencio, and Neon Mobile allow users to license their biometric identities and everyday scenes, often for a modest income. This trend is driven by the demand for high-quality, human-grade data to train advanced AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini, amid a decline in available training data from traditional sources. However, this comes with significant privacy and ethical concerns. Many contributors in developing countries see this as a practical solution to economic disparities, providing them with a more stable income in foreign currencies. Nevertheless, the risks include potential misuse of personal data, deepfakes, and lack of legal recourse due to the irrevocable and royalty-free licenses granted to AI companies. Experts warn that while the short-term financial benefits can be significant, the long-term implications may leave these workers without protections or transferable skills, benefiting primarily the companies that capture and use this data. The industry’s lack of transparency and potential for exploitation raises concerns about the future of data privacy and digital rights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
