In a significant industry shift, Meta has successfully recruited Alan Dye, Apple’s influential Vice President of Human Interface Design, to become its chief design officer. Dye’s move to Meta is seen as a strategic push for the company to enhance its AI-powered consumer hardware offerings. At Meta, Dye will report directly to CTO Andrew Bosworth and will spearhead a new design structure that integrates hardware, software, and AI-based interfaces. This move aligns with Meta’s focus on its Reality Labs division, which produces VR headsets and smart glasses.

Dye’s departure is part of a broader trend of senior leadership changes at Apple, which includes the exits of former COO Jeff Williams and AI chief John Giannandrea. Apple has announced that longtime designer Stephen Lemay will succeed Dye, continuing the legacy of innovation in Apple’s design team. Dye’s contributions to Apple were instrumental in shaping the interfaces of major Apple products, such as the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, and he played a vital role in the development of spatial computing concepts. Meta is also bringing in another Apple design veteran, Billy Sorrentino, as part of this transition.
