Monarch Tractor, an autonomous electric tractor startup, has informed employees of potential layoffs and a possible shutdown due to a strategic pivot away from manufacturing tractors. Founded in 2018, the company raised significant capital, including $133 million in 2024, to produce ‘driver optional’ tractors for agricultural use. However, issues with its autonomous technology and the loss of its contract manufacturer, Foxconn, have prompted Monarch to focus on software services, aiming to commercialize its autonomy technology as a SaaS offering. This shift could lead to the permanent layoff of up to 102 employees as the company restructures its business model. Despite these challenges, co-founder Mark Schwager, who recently left an executive role but remains on the board, expressed optimism about the company’s future. Monarch’s transition underscores the difficulties faced by startups in scaling complex technologies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
