Google is planning to deploy artificial intelligence datacentres in space as part of an initiative known as Project Suncatcher. The company aims to send its first trial equipment into orbit by early 2027. This ambitious project involves tightly packed constellations of about 80 solar-powered satellites, which will be equipped with powerful processors to meet the growing demand for AI. Google anticipates that falling space launch costs could make space-based datacentres comparable in cost to those on Earth by the mid-2030s. The initiative aims to minimize the impact on terrestrial resources required for cooling datacentres and leverage the almost unlimited renewable energy available in space. Although significant engineering challenges remain, such as thermal management and high-bandwidth ground communications, Google is optimistic about the potential of space to scale AI computing. The project will see Google partnering with companies like Planet to launch prototype satellites, marking a significant milestone towards scalable space-based AI solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
